Traffic Surveys

Intersection Turning Movement Surveys

Utilising our high mast video cameras, we can capture all movements at intersections, midblock and roundabouts. Generally, movements are recorded in 15-minute intervals and classifications can be as little as all light vehicles and heavy vehicles or into Austroads classes. Classes can also be adjusted to include trams, pedestrians, bicycles using the roadway and bicycles using the footpath or any other class the client requires.

Our video cameras can capture data continuously for 24-hour periods or be programmed for short recordings such as during peak traffic times. The cameras can be used to capture intersection queueing and delay also.

Our interactive reports help our clients determine traffic trends, peak times, and future requirements.  Our clients are supplied with the original footage from our cameras for auditing and data verification purposes.

Where video capture is not possible, TDC has a large pool of casual staff across Australia to perform manual data collection.

Vehicle Classification Surveys

Vehicle classification surveys can be undertaken using metrocount classifiers, high mast video recorders or manually where required.  Outputs can be adjusted to include all Austroads classifications or part thereof or broken down even more into specific class detail, such as vehicles with boat trailer, b-double trucks, or construction vehicles etc. Our very experienced team can “design” how and where equipment is placed to give you the best possible data quality.

Reporting can be adjusted to your data needs and can include individual vehicles, multi-day spreadsheeting, graphs, interactive charts, average speeds and so forth.

Speed Surveys

Speed surveys are conducted as per the vehicle classification surveys. Counters are always installed on straight sections of road to ensure that vehicles are travelling consistently.

A variety of speed reports from individual vehicle data to average and 85th percentile speeds can be produced over 15 minute or daily periods by direction.

Our field staff have completed the MetroCount certification course while our office staff are trained in producing a multitude of the many reports that are available from the MetroCount system.

Installation and reports are customised for each individual clients’ requirements. We have hundreds of RSU’s available to survey large or small survey programs for any length of time.

Parking Surveys

Parking assessments can require a wide range of data including occupancy, duration of stay, turnover, compliance, “bay-shuffling” and entry/exit identification. We employ a variety of field techniques including number plate data collection, video collection and occupancy counting.

Parking surveys can be designed, undertaken, and reported on accurately and economically by us using our purpose-built app.  We have also developed innovative plate matching spreadsheets to capture “near misses” and “bay shuffling” in time restricted areas.  We provide our clients with informative detailed parking surveys reports along a file of the parking area inventory for use on GIS software. Our processes can also incorporate signage inventory and linkages to GPS mapping as part of the parking survey or as a standalone survey.

Some of the many parking surveys we have completed are Gold Coast, Gunnedah, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Cairns CBD, Townsville CBD, Glebe, East Sydney, Wollongong, Penrith along with all Bus and Train Park and Ride facilities in Southeast Queensland.

Queue Surveys

TDC has completed hundreds of queue length and back of queue surveys using both manual and video-based techniques.
We most commonly use high mast video collection units (VCU’s) to conduct queue length surveys.
In some cases queue length and back of queue surveys can also be undertaken whilst surveying the intersections with no need to deploy additional equipment. The VCU’s can programmed to survey over multiple periods for one day or for multiple days as required.

Pedestrian Surveys

Pedestrian surveys are custom designed dependant on the data each client requires.  This could entail intersection movement, pathway use, public transport usage or retail and shopping centre movement. Pedestrian classifications can be compiled into more detailed classes including, but not limited to, mobility scooters, motorised scooters, elderly, children, and persons with a physical disability.

Travel Time Surveys

Accurate and informative data, including congestions hot spot identification, signal coordination issues and peak travel time profiles is collected using our Garmin GPS units. Vehicles travel times can be monitored in 1 second intervals which include the speed the vehicle is travelling.

Bicycle Surveys

Bicycle surveys are becoming an increasingly important type of data collection and we have developed a number of techniques for collection of quantitative and qualitative data. We have completed a number of bicycle surveys across Queensland and Sydney.

Vehicle Occupancy Surveys

Vehicle Occupancy surveys can be completed by either manual observation or video recording and can be partnered with questionnaire surveys to obtain traffic generation trends.

Origin Destination Surveys

TDC does not currently use camera techniques for this survey type as we have concerns regarding adequately capturing number plates from fixed cameras. Instead, we use manual observation and recording techniques for these surveys

Trip Generation Surveys

TDC has completed various trip generation surveys since 2018 for Transport for NSW and Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads. Recently completed land use traffic generation surveys include fast food outlets, drive through coffee shops, medium high-rise units, home-maker centres, hospitals, small shopping centres and industrial areas.

This includes complex data compilation of both interview data and automated survey data to provide a complete ‘picture’ of trip generation.

Midblock Surveys

Either High Mast video cameras (VCU’s) or Metrocount units (RSU’s) are used to conduct midblock surveys. For counts of less than one day or on highways with and AADT of more than 40,000 vehicles we use VCU’s. For counts on quieter roads we install RSU’s.

Other Transport Surveys

TDC has worked with government agencies to pioneer innovative questionnaires and survey techniques for passenger surveys

For example, we undertook Public Transport Origin Destination covering all train stations in South East Queensland over 20 working days with the questionnaire delivered to over 1 million people.

TDC has also surveyed all bus routes in Rockhampton and Townsville using a purpose-designed App we developed to collect origin-destination and traveller characteristics information for verifying operator ticketing records.
